The Child Inside

I was born in New England.

Outside of 5 years shortly after I got married, I've lived here all my life.

And I'll die here.

There's something particularly unique about this corner of the world.   I've been to many places in the US and others in North America and Europe.   Based on what I've experienced and based on what I've read, Boston may be the greatest city in the world.

People talk about the hospitals, the schools, the sports, the history, the people.   To me?   It's all about the weather.

I admit it.   I love the snow.

But, as I was walking down the street last night in temps that were, in the local vernacular, wicked cold, it occurred to me that only 5 months prior, I was roasting my ass off in the blazing sun on a 95+ degree day (we didn't get many of those in 2014.)   So, I enjoy the hot weather too.

There's something about cold weather, and particularly snow that just makes me happy.

The dogs love it too.   But, when the snow can be measured in multiples of height of the little one, the snow can be hard to manage.

During the height of the recent blizzard, they refused to pee on the pads we had laid out in the living room, so I had to take them out.   Out the front door, the little one disappeared into a snow drift, so I scooped them up to carry them to the barely plowed street.

Step one... up to my calf.
Step two... up to my knee...
Step three....   lose my balance and I'm sitting in a pile of snow up to my waist.

The dogs were ok... tucked away in daddy's grip.   So, I sat there a moment... transported back a few decades to when I was a kid.

I loved it.

  1. I truly enjoy having four seasons, fall being my favorite. I too enjoy the snow, for about a month and then I am done. I was done at the end of December.

    1. I'm not a fan of 20 degree days in late March. Nor am I a fan of driving rain when it's 35 degrees in January.

But, I also whine and bitch when there are more than 3 90 degree days in a row. Or when I sweat my way through the night (thank Jesus for central air. Yes. The name of the guy who fixed my A/C was Jesus. )

But.... living in San Diego... where the weather is "perfect" all year long? THAT would make me want to throw up.

    2. Having spent a bit of time in San Diego, the weather is far from perfect and the water of the Pacific there is colder than Lake Michigan in the height of summer. Although you are close to the Tijuana donkey shows.

Gawd, I hate freezing weather. Perhaps, it's the landscape which seems stark and barren compared to the spring and summers of winter-weather states when life is bursting forward, playful and plentiful, and the colors emerge and scream. A dim sun, and a perpetual gray sky like the chill of sleeping forever buried in a grave.
On the other hand, I love the weather of the subtropics and rarely even put on long pants. Something to be said for shorts, a short sleeved shirt and sandals nearly every day of the year. Give me the heat and humidity; an iced tea at high noon is the nectar of the Gods. The Malabar spinach and a few seeds of mint planted five years ago simply can't be killed flourishing in the heat and moisture.

While the winter boys worry about having enough wood for the stove that keeps him alive or that a walk with the dogs through the drifts may be his last one, I'll take 30 days of 80+ in January, our annual first-day-of-the-year swim in the buff as close to midnight as possible in the pool and the full face of Mother Soleil, yellow with solar energy, that brings bursting life and colors.

Hey guys, if ya can dig out, meet me on the beach across the street from the Tween Waters at 6:30 tomorrow morn while the pups chase gulls and the crabs falling behind the tide.

    Yup, another warm one.

    1. a bit of salty sand in the keyboard eh? 7 deg F here today and a hard Northeast blow against the house windows required a fire inside as well as upping the water temperature in the outside boiler to maintain the required 72 deg F inside. On the bright side, we are having bear chops and home made French fries for supper. (yes, bear.)
